How to Light Up Your Home with Hodgson Light and Log

When it comes to lighting in your home, the proper light fixtures or fireplace can make or break your entire interior design. An otherwise comfortable, warm living room can turn cold and off-putting with a harsh or jarring lighting fixture. By contrast, a room designed for economy rather than comfort can benefit greatly from one well-placed light or fireplace. Suffice it to say that we at Hodgson Light and Log recognize the value of effective lighting in your home. For that reason, today’s blog post will focus on how to light your home and which types of lighting you should use to best suit your needs.

Lighting Your Living Room

When it comes to lighting your living room, one should generally aim to assembly a diversity of light sources. When lighting up a living room, a strong rule of thumb is to try and gather 8 light sources. While this may outwardly seem like a lot, keep in mind that a light source doesn’t just mean a lighting fixture—it also means windows and sliding doors. You can also diversify the types of lights and light fixtures that you use in your living room by incorporating different styles of lighting, such as arc lights, table lamps, floor lamps, and desk lamps. Additionally, consider looking into a ceiling fan for your living room if you haven’t already, as ceiling fans are an amazing way to centrally light your living room while also providing a source of air circulation. By maintaining a diversity of light sources in the living room, you’ll be able to complement anything you and your guests do together with an ideal light setup.

Lighting Your Bedroom

When it comes to lighting your bedroom, layering your lighting is often considered a strong option. When we say you should “layer” your lighting, what we essentially mean is that you should seek to keep multiple varieties of lighting in your spaces to accommodate many varieties of moods. In turn, this gives you many different ways to explore your home and keeps your home fresh, comfortable, and truly “you.” To achieve layered lighting in your bedroom, we at Hodgson recommend you attempt to light for tasks, decoration, and ambience. This means that you should do your best to establish a light source that best allows you to complete tasks (such as reading or writing), beautifies or highlights areas of your bedroom you’d like to highlight, and provides a unified, general sense of light. By doing all three, you can create a light palette in your bedroom that truly adds texture, comfort, and utility to your home.
