All About Ceiling Fans: Choosing the Right Fan for You

Choosing a ceiling fan for your home can feel like a difficult decision. If you’ve never had one installed before, you may be wondering about the different costs and benefits you can expect. Well, you may be surprised by the many benefits that installing a ceiling fan can have in your home. Whether you’re in it for practical reasons (such as increasing air flow or decreasing AC costs) or aesthetic reasons, you may be surprised at the wide variety of options available to you.

In this month’s blog post, we’re discussing how you can choose the right ceiling fan for your home.

“Close to Ceiling” Ceiling Fans

Also known as “huggers” or “low profile” ceiling fans, these fans are perfect for rooms with lower ceilings. Because their motor attaches directly to the ceiling, these fans can operate effectively without hanging nearly as low as other, more conventional ceiling fans. Low profile ceiling fans are ideal for rooms with ceilings that are between 7.5-8 feet high, particularly if you need air flow for a small space.

Great Room Ceiling Fans

Great room ceiling fans are perfect for, well, great rooms! These fans are designed for maximum air flow across a large area while still providing an elegant, unobtrusive addition to your home.  Generally speaking, we recommend these fans for rooms about 20’ x 20’ or larger, since these fans tend to have long blades that can command a lot of air flow.

Outdoor Ceiling Fans

Another fantastic option are outdoor ceiling fans. If you plan on spending a lot of time on your patio, deck, or lanai, then outdoor ceiling fans are a fantastic way to promote air circulation on those hot, muggy days. That way, you can still enjoy the beautiful outdoors even when the temperature isn’t ideal.

Outdoor ceiling fans are also built to withstand all the difficulties that come from being outside 24/7. Damp rated fans are built for covered outdoor areas, where they may inadvertently be exposed to some humidity. As a result, it’s best to use these fans on covered patios and screened porches. Wet rated fans, however, are built for direct exposure to the elements. As a result, these fans can withstand wind, rain, snow, ice, and even salty ocean water. If you’re not sure how exposed your fan will be to the elements, then a good rule of thumb is to choose a wet rated fan just to be safe.
